But how much of this release was created with AI?
A figure in a long red cloak and hood stands in a historic European street, surrounded by crowds. The scene is split diagonally by a vivid red wash that illuminates silhouettes of people on the right side.

Panache Digital Games released 1666: Amsterdam into Early Access today on PC via both Steam and the Epic Games Store. For $29.99 you can help shape the final product of the game by letting the developers know what does or does not work.

The team at Panache has certainly already heard the feedback about their extensive use of generative AI slop for many of the art assets. Many of those assets reared their ugly heads back when the demo for 1666: Amsterdam was released this past June. Panache Digital Games issued an apology for using generative AI back in June, but it still didn't sit well with most people. The fact that generative AI was used at all, regardless of it appearing in a demo, is what a lot of people had, and still have, an issue with.

Despite the rather vocal backlash from the gaming public, Panache's co-founder, Patrice Désilets, stated as recently as August 11, 2026, that they were still using AI during the game's development.

I can ask the AI to give me 75 different variations of one thing, but I cannot have 75 different illustrators come up with a variation in three seconds. This is the world in which we're living, and while we were this small team and building [the game], we put it in. We didn't even realise it was AI any more because we were used to seeing it.
Désilets did continue to say that they are using "less and less of (AI)" in development. Echoing remarks made back in June, Désilets also said that AI assets "won't be in the final product." That's not to say that AI tools won't still be used for the rest of 1666: Amsterdam's development. So far, there is no public disclosure of the use of AI during the development of 1666: Amsterdam's Steam page. Disclosures about AI use on Steam store pages are not a hard requirement by Valve, and their omission from a store page is not indicative of anything.

Early Access begins with the players

Today marks the beginning of 1666: Amsterdam's Early Access journey.

Panache Digital Games will continue developing the game throughout Early Access, with player feedback helping the team identify what works, what needs improvement, and where the experience should go next.

Players are encouraged to share their experiences, feedback, and discoveries directly with the development team through the official Panache Discord community.

Every name. Every debt.

Amsterdam is a city built on wealth, power, and sheer will, but beneath its streets lies a force it did not forge.

Entities known as The Originals have lived for centuries, granted time, power, and the freedom to abuse both. Now, that power is owed.

Players step into the role of Noa Brooklyn, born the Collector and raised by the Zaindaris for a purpose she did not choose: taking that power back.

By day, players investigate a handcrafted Amsterdam, searching for the Originals hidden behind human faces. Identify them.

Track them. Mark them.

When night falls and the Esbat begins, the hunt changes. The Originals reveal their true forms, and Noa must use witchcraft, spellcasting, strategy, and everything she has learned to confront them and collect what is owed.

Switch between Noa and Aaron

Noa does not investigate Amsterdam alone.

Aaron, summoned from 1999, now experiences the world through the eyes of a cat. Players can switch between Noa and Aaron, using two radically different playstyles to investigate the city, uncover hidden paths, and approach their targets in different ways.
One wields witchcraft. The other has four paws and flair.
