Shaun Escayg, creative director at Naughty Dog, recently posted an image on Instagram that he captioned simply, "Research." The photo was of a cannon that fans figured out was located at Fort George in Trinidad and Tobago. Fans, of course, also began speculating that the image was "research" for a new Uncharted game.
The hope may not be entirely out of left field. Escayg was the co-director on Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (pictured above). The Lost Legacy also just happens to be the last new Uncharted release, coming out in 2017 as a standalone expansion to Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.
The entire scene certainly gives off Uncharted vibes. An old fort in a lush and vibrant tropical location? I mean it is very Uncharted coded. It's just that it's way too vague to tell for sure what Escayg and others at Naughty Dog are cooking right now. This could be "research" for some personal project Escayg is working on. Maybe it's "research" for an entirely new IP at Naughty Dog.
We do know that Naughty Dog is working on more than one new single-player games right now. We know for a fact that Naughty Dog is working on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. The other project, or projects, are currently complete unknowns.
If Escayg is indeed doing research for a new Uncharted title, that means the game's development would still be at an incredibly early stage of development. It's entirely possible that the game, new Uncharted or otherwise, is still several years away from any sort of release.
