Baldur's Gate 3 was a massive hit for developer Larian Studios. The game won countless Game of the Year awards and still manages to easily pull in over 50,000 players daily even though the game came out in August 2023. It should really come as no surprise that Baldur's Gate is getting a TV show adaptation, joining with several other popular games that are being turned into shows or films over the past few years.

According to Deadline, The television adaptation of the Dungeons & Dragons-based universe will be led by HBO. The showrunner will be Craig Mazin, whom you may recognize for his work with The Last of Us and Chernobyl. As mentioned, the television show will be a continuation of the story and events from Baldur's Gate 3, not a retelling. The show will focus on familiar personalities as well as new faces and how these characters deal with the events that transpired at the end of the game.

Mazin isn't going into this one blind. He's apparently a massive fan of Baldur's Gate 3 and has put "nearly 1,000 hours" into the game.

After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created. I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.
When it came to working on The Last of Us TV show adaptation, Mazin worked alongside Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann. For the Baldur's Gate TV adaptation, Mazin will be running things without Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian Studios. The development studio confirmed to Geoff Keighley that they have no involvement in the upcoming television series.

While Larian did develop Baldur's Gate 3, the Baldur's Gate IP and rights are owned by Hasbro through its subsidiary, Wizards of the Coast.
