  • Metal: Hellsinger Developer The Outsiders Shut Down by Funcom

The closure comes as Funcom had its biggest game launch ever.

Funcom has announced the closure of The Outsiders, the Stockholm-based studio responsible for the critically acclaimed rhythm FPS, Metal: Hellsinger. The shutdown is a result of a wider restructuring and series of layoffs at Funcom, which acquired the studio in 2021.

The news was confirmed by The Outsiders' founder, David Goldfarb via Bluesky, who expressed his disappointment while also highlighting the team's resilience. He recalled a previous "near-death studio experience" when their project Darkborn was canceled, a setback that ultimately led to the creation of the award-winning Metal: Hellsinger. Despite the game's success and a dedicated fanbase, the studio has become the latest victim of the ongoing wave of layoffs that has plagued the video game industry throughout 2025.

I have not had much time to process the news but all of us at The Outsiders and Funcom Stockholm have been affected by the layoffs at Funcom and our 10 year old studio will be closing. Many of us had survived a near-death studio experience years back when Darkborn was cancelled, and because of this team's loyalty and refusal to quit, Metal Hellsinger was born. It will always be a high point for me personally and I will be forever grateful we got to make it and for the wonderful team and partnerships that made it happen.

We had hoped to do something even better this time--

--Things don't always to the way you hope.

But we are not giving up, and we are going to try to continue on in some new form. If you think you can help in any way, with business leads, placement for employees, guidance, whatever it is, I would be genuinely grateful if you reach out here. Change is always tough and right now we are all hurting.
The closure of The Outsiders is part of a larger restructuring plan that Funcom initiated in early October 2025. This move comes on the heels of the launch of Funcom's Dune: Awakening, which was Funcom's fastest ever selling game having reached one million players two weeks after release. While the future is uncertain for the talented team at The Outsiders, Goldfarb has expressed a desire to "continue on in some new form" and is actively seeking opportunities for his team.

The Chinese tech giant already owns 29% of Funcom.

In August 2019, Tencent became the largest shareholder of game developer Funcom. The Chinese tech giant had upped their ownership to 29% at that point in time. Today, Tencent announced that they have created a cash offer to acquire all shares of Funcom.

As it stands, Funcom is publically traded on the Oslo Stock Exchange. Tencent is looking to acquire shares from all other shareholders. They are offering them 17 Norwegian...

Metal: Hellsinger's New DLC Pack is Decidedly Not Very Metal
      by Shawn Zipay
Nothing says metal quite like Paramore's Misery Business.

Metal: Hellsinger is a rhythm game where you slay demons of hell to the beat of some pulse-pounding heavy metal songs. Right? Right. It featured artists like Serj Tankian from System of a Down, Tatiana Shmayluk from Jinjer, Matt Heafy from Trivium, and many more heavy metal heavy hitters. The songs they all performed were written for and created specifically for Metal: Hellsinger.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Finally Frees Itself from the PlayStation 3 Jail
      by Shawn Zipay
An announcement that few thought was possible.

At long, long last, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will no longer be confined to the PlayStation 3. With last week's announcement of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, Konami will finally get Metal Gear Solid 4 into the hands of a much larger audience.

Of course, Metal Gear Solid 4 won't be the only title contained within the "collection." It will be paired with one of my favorite Metal Gear...

      Rhythm FPS Metal: Hellsinger Revealed
      by Shawn Zipay
An FPS where you battle hellspawn to the beat of a different drum.

The Outsiders, led by award-winning FPS creator David Goldfarb, have been working on a new FPS. Unlike traditional shooters, Metal: Hellsinger, rewards players that shoot, kill, and carry out actions to the beat of a high-energy metal song. Think of it as like Crypt of the Necrodancer but as an FPS set in hell.

As you match the beat of the song with your shots, your power will increase along with the fidelity...
