  • Romero Games Issues Update After Funding Pulled by Publisher

There may still be some light at the end of the tunnel.

Despite some reports to the contrary, Romero Games is still alive. With a little luck it will be both "alive and well" soon.

Romero Games, a studio founded by industry veterans John Romero and Brenda Romero, were well into the development on its latest game when their undisclosed publisher suddenly pulled funding from the project late last week. This led to the game being worked on at Romero Games being left in limbo. It also led many to believe that the studio had closed immediately with everyone laid off.

Fortunately, that's not quite the case. Romero Games issued a statement today on Bluesky that explains what is presently going on both with their studio and with the game in question.

The statement quickly addresses some of the bigger questions and pieces of misinformation that came about following last week's news. Their statement does confirm that funding for the project was cancelled and that their game was also cancelled.

It continues on to state that they cannot legally disclose the name of the publisher that suddenly withdrew funding, but that it should be easy to infer who the publisher was based on public information. There are reports that say Microsoft met with Romero Games just one day before funding was pulled from the studio. Make of that information what you will.

The good news, as noted in today's statement, is Romero Games is not closed. Romero Games says that they have been "contacted by several publishers interested in helping (them) bring the game across the finish line." However, until they're able to fully evaluate those opportunities and agree to a new deal, leadership will need to "reassess the entire staffing."

John Romero is Making a New Game
      by Shawn Zipay
John Romero is about to make Unreal Engine 5 his-- oh, who are we kidding.

As one of the key figures behind such standout franchises like Doom, Quake, Heretic, and er... Daikatana, John Romero is no stranger to the gaming industry. The last game he worked on, Empire of Sin, came out back in 2020 to some rather tepid reviews. Some bad reviews don't keep a good Romero down (again, Daikatana says hello), which is why Romero is looking to create a new first-person shooter.

John Romero revealed that he is making a new shooter today during the Joystiq gamescom special podcast recording. This will be the first shooter he's directly designed since the critically acclaimed Daikatana.
"I'm working on several games at once right now," John Romero said. "But [Brenda] had mentioned earlier that I'm working with a concept artist, and so I've got some cool imagery for the main character." Brenda Romero jumped in: "I'm concerned about how much you're going to say."
