Frostbite is now a "platform for collaborative innovation."

Electronic Arts and DICE are rebranding and evolving the Frostbite game engine into a "platform for collaborative innovation." To that end, EA revealed a new logo and brand identity for Frostbite. Gone is the broken glass hand design logo that has been used since 2013. In its place is a more "real" hand design that looks more akin to a topographical map than anything else.

The new logo actually looks closer to the original 2008 design of the Frostbite logo than anything else. Here, you can see how the logo has evolved over the life of Frostbite.

For those wondering, the whole broken hand or broken glass designs that spanned 2011 through 2023 were meant to emphasize Frostbite's use of destructible environments in Battlefield. As any Battlefield fan can tell you, the destructible environments have most definitely taken a back seat in recent releases. The new design is meant to shine a light on "the collaborative relationships transforming Frostbite from within."

This rebrand reflects who we are today and signals not just a visual shift for Frostbite, but a philosophical one, with a renewed focus on partnership with our teams and creators. Over the years, we’ve been working hand-in-hand with game teams across EA to understand their development and technology needs better, prioritizing changes that create more flexibility for innovation and a positive user experience for developers.

Frostbite is developed specifically for EA and we are deeply invested in building the best tools and technology for our games. In this new era, our mission is to unite and amplify the expertise and efforts of every EA game team that uses Frostbite, adapting to their unique needs in the way only we can.

EA game teams are free to develop on any engine they choose. It’s up to us to make Frostbite the best choice for our games.
The whole topographical nature of the new design is meant to show overlapping layers. That is, it shows how the teams at EA "build upon each other's strengths." The sharp edges have been smoothed over to show the "commitment to addressing Frostbite's rougher edges, creating a smoother experience for both creators and players."

If nothing else, the new logo looks kind of neat when a game logo is featured within the hand.
