James McCaffrey has passed away at the age of 65 after a battle with cancer. McCaffrey is an actor that is best known as the voice of Max Payne in the entire Max Payne series. McCaffrey's voice was most recently heard in the form of Alex Casey in Alan Wake 2.

The news of McCaffrey's passing first broke on TMZ. According to TMZ's initial report, McCaffrey passed away on Sunday while surrounded by friends and family. The actor was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, though it isn't stated just how long ago the diagnosis was made.

Max Payne and Alan Wake developer, Remedy Entertainment, added additional confirmation to TMZ's initial reporting of McCaffrey's passing.

Remedy Entertainment's creative director, Sam Lake, also voiced his condolences on social media.

I’m heartbroken to hear the sad news of James McCaffrey’s passing. We worked together for more than 25 years. He was a lovely man and a dear friend. He was a key part of the Remedy family. He was a brilliant actor. No one could do what he did better than him.

James was Max Payne, Thomas Zane, Zachariah Trench and finally Alex Casey. I had the honor of sharing Max Payne’s role and Casey’s role with him. He was a joy to work with. I will cherish his memory and I miss him. My deepest condolences to his family. Rest in peace, Jim.
James McCaffrey didn't just voice Max Payne and Alex Casey. He voiced Zachariah Trench in Control, starred in 56 episodes of the TV series Rescue Me, 34 episodes of the Viper series, episodes of As the World Turns, Suits, Blue Bloods, and dozens of other roles. McCaffrey was also set to continue his work as Max Payne in the upcoming remakes of Max Payne 1 and Max Payne 2.

McCaffrey is survived by his wife Rochelle Bostrom and their daughter Tiernan McCaffrey.

Max Payne is in my top 3 favourite games of all time, it came out when i was 12 and left a huge impact on me, that character and that voice is iconic and will be with me forever.
I wonder what they do with the remakes now, i guess Max will have a new voice.

I shouted "NO!" when I saw the headlines elsewhere. It confused the people around me. I don't normally do that. Thanks for mentioning Viper, because that's how I remember him (Season 1 and 4), not from Max Payne.

Thank you James for how much you did for Remedy Entertainment and your fans. And you're the main protagonist in Viper to me while Jeff kept the Defender's seat warm until your return.

I'm making a heaving sigh, because it's a late goodbye, but... One more time. Let's see him one more time. Take care on the other side James and thank you again.
