The music composer may have just let slip something he shouldn't have.

There may be more of The Last of Us on the way. During a recent interview, series composer Gustavo Santaolalla mentioned that "new editions" of The Last of Us Part 2 are coming. Santaolalla says, "In the new editions, you can make me play certain themes and well, I can't tell you anything else."

New editions of The Last of Us Part 2? Some media outlets have immediately jumped on to the idea that there is a native PlayStation 5 port of the game coming based on this vague statement from Santaolalla. Others seem to believe that Santaolalla was talking about both a PlayStation 5 version and a PC release of The Last of Us Part 2.

The interview with Santaolalla was conducted by Blender. Expanding a bit on what he said, Santaolalla says that the "new editions" of the game will let players interact a bit more with Santaolalla's in-game character. Hence the part where he talks about making him play certain themes.

Santaolalla's remarks are the first anybody has heard of anything new related to The Last of Us Part 2. The game already received a PlayStation 5 performance update back in May 2021, so whatever these "new editions" are will be more than a mere performance patch. It could be that Naughty Dog and Sony are readying some sort of a "Definitive Edition" or "Director's Cut" release. A version of the game updated to more fully utilize PlayStation 5 hardware and technology that will later be released as the PC version down the line.

It would probably be a bit foolish to expect that Santaolalla is talking about a full remake here, as Naughty Dog did with The Last of Us Part 1. Though I wouldn't be too surprised to hear that there were a few technical and graphical improvements. A version made for the PlayStation 5 hardware would also probably feature vastly improved loading times along with DualSense haptic functionality.

If there is a PC version coming, and it would stand to reason that there is, there is no saying on when that version would be released. Sony typically waits to release PC versions of their titles until months or years after their initial release on PlayStation. With The Last of Us Part 1, the PC release came about six months after it was out on PlayStation 5.
