  • Mercy and More Nerfed in Overwatch 2 Season 3

Blizzard extends a helping hand to some Support Heroes, except Mercy.

Some details about the changes coming in Season 3 for Overwatch 2 were shared today by developer Blizzard. When Season 3 begins on Tuesday, February 7, a balance patch will drop as well. This patch will offer some buffs to most of the support Heroes in Overwatch 2, except for Mercy who is actually getting nerfed a bit.

When it comes to support Heroes in ranked and "high level play" Mercy was pretty much the only go-to option. She's basically been the meta for team composition for a while now, but that is probably going to change now in Season 3.

Here are the Mercy-specific changes coming in tomorrow's update.

    • Guardian Angel cooldown increased from 1.5 to 2.5 seconds
    • Holding the backwards directional input and canceling the ability with Jump now moves 20% slower
    • Caduceus Staff healing-per-second reduced from 55 to 45
    • Healing is increased by 50% for allies under half health
    • Regeneration Passive removed (she retains the support one though)
    • New Passive: "Sympathetic Recovery" where she heals herself for 25% of healing done with the Caduceus Staff

The idea behind these changes is to have Mercy move around from Hero to Hero more often than not. As it is, she typically sticks to a DPS class and uses her damage buff ability on them, and that's kind of it. With these changes, Blizzard hopes that Mercy players will now move around to other teammates more often in order to heal them.

It looks like the only other support class to get a nerf is Ana. The duration of her healing grenade and anti-healing grenade has been reduced slightly.

Other support Heroes are getting some buffs. Lucia and Moira will now earn their ultimates faster than before. Zenyatta will be able to fire five more shots at enemies. Brigitte, by way of her Repair Pack, will instantly heal allies for 25 HP in addition to its existing heal over time ability.

Non-support Heroes are also getting hit with the buff/nerf hammers. Junkrat's Concussion Mines will now do 20 less damage. Reinhardt's Earthshatter ultimate is also getting its damage reduced. Widowmaker will once again have a maximum HP of 175 instead of 200.

Tank Hero, Ramattra, will no longer have an unlimited ultimate anymore. While his area of effect ultimate will continue as long as an enemy is within its radius, it will cap out at 20 seconds. Another tank, Wrecking Ball, will have some of its health swapped out for regenerating shields. Wrecking Ball will also have a lower cooldown timer on the Pile Driver slam.

More broadly speaking, a nerf to the amount of ultimate charge retained when swapping Heroes is coming. Instead of keeping 30% of the charge when changing Heroes, you will retain just 25%.

Season 3 will also include a new Battle Pass with the theme of Asian mythological items. There will also be a special "Loverwatch" dating simulator thing coming for Valentine's Day. A collaboration event with One-Punch Man will arrive in march. A new map, Antarctic Peninsula, is also coming in tomorrow's big update. There are also several quality of life improvements coming in tomorrow's update.
