Change will come with Shadowlands.
WoW: Shadowlands

Currently, players need to plunk down a not-insignificant amount of money if they wish to change the gender and appearance of their character in World of Warcraft. That current fee is $15 (USD), but it will soon be made free. This is according to a new report from Eurogamer that says Blizzard will make this change when the Shadowlands expansion releases later this year.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Blizzard executive producer John High says that you will no longer have to pay to change your gender in World of Warcraft. Once the expansion drops, you will be able to visit a barber shop and make the change for free. This means that all appearance changes, including gender, will finally be free together at the barber shop.

If you have been thinking of making the change but were hesitant to do so because of the lofty price, you may just want to wait a few more months. Shadowlands is expected to be released later this year, presumably in the Fall. The beta for Shadowlands is expected to begin the week of July 13.

"A long time ago, we had the ability for players to go in - it was actually a paid service - and change their character. Much of that is now in the barber shop in the game," he said. "And as we were adding things up in Shadowlands, we realised, 'Gosh the only way you can change your gender in World of Warcraft is to go through this paid service.' And we felt like that's not the right message.

"Unfortunately we can't fix that right now but it is our intent with Shadowlands to take that out of being a paid service thing and [put it] in the barber shop. But that's not something we can easily hotfix - unfortunately we can't do that right now. It is something that we're going to have in Shadowlands itself."
