Early Access begins later this year.
Baldur's Gate 3

Developer Larian Studios announced that an Early Access release for Baldur's Gate 3 is coming later this year. The studio has been fairly quiet about their plans despite a few leaks here and there.

An Early Access period for Baldur's Gate 3 probably won't come as much of a surprise to fans of the development team. Their previous games, Divinity: Original Sin and its direct sequel Divinity: Original Sin II, both had Early Access releases. They are beefy RPGs with a lot of systems at work. It just makes sense to have this period before getting that "final" release out to the public.

According to information shared directly with PC Gamer, Larian Studios seems to be really embracing the Dungeons & Dragons player handbook.

"We went very far to implement as much as we could from the [D&D] player handbook," Larian CEO Swen Vincke told PC Gamer during a hands-off demo. "So that means that there's a lot of stuff that you can do to fool around with and test it. I've been test running this like 50 times and it's always different. I always have to do different things to be able to survive."
Beyond this adherence to the D&D player handbook, Larian will be introducing a fair number of new systems and features. This includes the addition of simultaneous turn-based combat. They are also trying to figure out how much damage various, random objects will do to an enemy. For example, an object that can be used to injure an enemy would be a tossed shoe. Just how much would that actually hit for?

The Early Access release for Baldur's Gate 3 will include five character types. You will still be able to make your own custom avatar if you so desire.
