  • Nvidia Ray Tracing Support Added to Wolfenstein: Youngblood

Kill nazis in unprecedented visual fidelity.

The real-time ray tracing support for Wolfenstein: Youngblood was released today for the PC version of the game. The update, courtesy of MachineGames, Arkane Studios Lyon, and Nvidia allows players to work towards a better tomorrow with really pretty visuals.

Specifically, the update introduces ray-traced reflections throughout each level. Any surface, so long as it's reflective even a little, "will feature accurate, high-quality, high-detail, lifelike reflections that elevate graphical fidelity." These accurate reflections also include little details like weapon effects and even real-time reflections on enemies. It's not exactly something you would ever see with techniques like screen-space reflections.

Today's update also apparently includes a performance update. I'm not 100% sure if this press release is simply talking about the addition of DLSS for the 20xx series cards, or if that performance upgrade was made for everyone. From the sounds of things, these performance gains may only be seen if you use DLSS and use a card that supports it.

More details about this ray-tracing tech in Wolfenstein: Youngblood can be read over on the Nvidia site.

You'll be lucky to achieve even "cinematic" framerates with this.

CD Projekt Red has been working on an update for Cyberpunk 2077 that will add path tracing capabilities to the game on April 11. Path tracing is essentially "full" ray tracing. Current ray tracing use in most games is a drastically scaled back version of what full ray tracing is capable of.

Path tracing is typically reserved for static renders, or as part of film and TV visual effects...
