SteamVR Desktop Theater Mode Enters Early Beta
Valve announced today that the SteamVR Desktop Theater Mode is now in an early beta phase. They say that this will be "showcased at next week's Game Developer Conference in San Francisco." What is Desktop Theater Mode? It's a mode that allows VR users to play non-VR games with their VR hardware still on. It doesn't magically turn your non-VR ready games into 3D experiences. It instead probably projects a flat virtual screen or monitor that you can view as if it were a real world screen or monitor ... -

Valve Announces 'The Lab' for VR Experiments at GDC
If you will be attending GDC next week in San Francisco, you may want to set aside some time to check out what Valve will be doing. The studio announced that they will debut something called "The Lab," which is a compilation of a number of VR experiments that visitors can try out. The Lab is "set in a pocket universe of Aperture Science" and "offers multiple ways to enjoy room-scale VR." It's probably almost a 100% guarantee that the VR hardware on display for these demos will be the HTC V... -

Gabe Newell Responds to Terrible Dota 2 Shanghai Major - Calls James Harding an Ass, Fires Production Company
Apparently, the Dota 2 Shanghai Major is kind of a shitshow. There are apparently problems with players getting the appropriate hardware, there are problems with being unable to watch the matches, and the list goes on.
It apparently got so bad that Gabe Newell took to the Dota 2 subreddit to reveal that someone named James is an ass and that they're firing the production company.
Two things: 1) James. We've had issues with James at previous events. Some Valve peopl... -

Valve Increases Every CS:GO Major to $1 Million Prize Pool
Valve is starting to show the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive competitive scene a bit more love. Starting with MLG Columbus 2016, every CS:GO Major Championship will have a prize pool of $1 million.
When we announced the first CS:GO Major Championship in 2013, we hoped the Majors would be rallying points for the community, tent-pole events that could draw new audiences and amplify the value of all events. Since then, the professional CS:GO community has been growing at an incre... -

SteamVR Performance Test is Live
Valve has just made live their SteamVR Performance Test to assess if your PC is ready for our virtual reality future.
The SteamVR Performance Test measures your system's rendering power using a 2-minute sequence from Valves Aperture Robot Repair VR demo. After collecting the data it determines whether your system is capable of running VR content at 90fps and whether VR content can tune the visual fidelity up to the recommended level. For machines that are not VR Ready the tool can...
