  • God of War Laufey Announced with Gameplay and a Talking Jell-O Cube

And introducing Jack Quaid as Frank Phranque, a literal cube!
Faye, a giant with flowing golden hair, decked out in armor and holding a sword looking back determined at the viewer as she stands next to a cosmic jelly cube atop a mountain ridge overlooking a vast landscape.

The latest State of Play ended with a big gameplay showcase for God of War Laufey. The newest God of War from Sony's Santa Monica Studio is a new adventure focusing on Faye, the recently deceased wife of Kratos and mother to Loki Atreus.

Well, as is pretty damn common with the God of War games, death doesn't mean the end of one's adventures. After her funeral, Faye awakens in a strange land. This land is called the Everywhen, a place where gods go when they die.

Within the Everywhen, Faye will go up against creatures and gods from a myriad of mythologies. These powerful beings "vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic." This probably opens the door for some Greek gods to show up such as Kratos' father, Zeus, or his good buddy Athena. We may even see the return of Odin. Though none of those gods made an appearance in the gameplay reveal, we did get a look at the Egyptian goddess, Sekhmet. The big red baddy seems to be the Mongolian god of war, Begtse.

Do you know what else we saw in the gameplay reveal? A talking enchanted ribbon named Rue, voiced by Perlina Lau. The ribbon, Rue, is attached to "a devastatingly powerful sword." Also revealed was a talking off-brand cosmic Jell-O cube named Phranque, who is voiced by Jack Quaid. Because you can't have a new AAA action-adventure game without sidekicks.

The combat in God of War Laufey does appear to faster paced and more fluid than Kratos did in the last couple of mainline entries. Faye is able to move easily between ground and air, similar to the combat flow in the earlier God of War titles.

Combat is also enhanced by Faye's golden palm abilities.

As the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, the most powerful protector of the Giants — Faye wielded fearsome powers, including the ability to manipulate souls.

After arriving in the afterlife of the gods, a place steeped in the oldest of magic, Faye’s own soul related abilities are greatly amplified.

In the Everywhen, Faye can strike her golden palm at a foe with such force it detaches their soul from their body. From there, Faye can attack the soul directly, knock it into other enemies, and more — opening up combos and creative uses that we hope players will have a lot of fun mastering.
The gameplay reveal during State of Play was basically the first 20 minutes of God of War Laufey. A separate combat focused video was also released. Both of them are included below along with a couple of additional videos.

Not even GTA6 is enough to make me want to play on my PS5. Mad at Sony and mostly for wasting money on liiiiiive service crap.

Yeah. I just kind of stopped caring about PS5 exclusives. I cared more when they were releasing these games on PC (and when they weren't constantly shutting down studios and laying people off). At least then I know I could at least get a pretty stable 60fps experience with higher visual fidelity than the base PS5 I own.

Their output has been horrendous this gen otherwise. Too few. Too far between. Same remakes, remasters, sequels for the same few franchises.

I'm sure I'll eventually get GOW Laufey at some point but it's not going to be a day one purchase that's for damn sure. Going to need a very big discount. I 100%'d the previous two GOW games. And yeah, this just kind of seems like more of the same I guess. Right down to the forced companions for... some reason.

The Wolverine game is also a big "whatever." Another big, bombastic Marvel game from Insomniac. I don't even think I got anywhere near halfway through Spider-Man 2 before I dropped off. Based on what I've seen, I think I'd rather just replay X-men Origins Wolverine again. At least that game wasn't shy about dismembering limbs, not just the robot appendages. 🙄

I'm not going to bother with GTA6 on console when I know it'll run better on my PC. Rockstar isn't getting any double-dip from me. I don't care how long it takes. I have tons of other things I can play in the meantime.
