Sony Santa Monica, the studio behind the God of War franchise, is reportedly working on a spinoff title that is focused on Faye, wife of Kratos and mother to Atreus. Over this past weekend, a LinkedIn profile excerpt was shared of a writer that claims to have worked on the project.
The LinkedIn profile shared that they were a Senior Writer at Sony Interactive Entertainment. The job description on the profile says that they "helped shape narrative vision and creative direction at Sony Santa Monica Studio for a new franchise within the God of War universe."
Following that leak, the leaker named NateTheHate chimed in to elaborate on what this "new franchise" might be. NateTheHate claims that this new game would focus on the character of Faye. He says that the gameplay of this new title will differ from the Norse God of War games and will have a larger focus on action. He continues to say that there may be a reveal coming later this year with a release expected in the first half of 2027.
According to another source, Shpeshal Nick, this Faye-focused title will be "closer in style to Devil May Cry than the newer God of War games." He claims that's how this spinoff was described to him.
Given that the Norse God of War games literally begin with Faye's funeral, it's probably safe to assume that this spinoff will take place prior to events in the last two God of War titles. Throughout 2018's God of War and God of War Ragnarök, we did learn a fair bit about Faye. We know that Faye was a Jötunn, or a Frost Giant. We also get a decent look at what Faye looked like through various flashback or dream-like sequences throughout both titles.
This God of War spinoff with Faye is allegedly the game that Cory Barlog is directing. Barlog was the game director and story writer for 2018's God of War. For God of War Ragnarok, Barlog served as the game's creative director and producer, leaving the main game director duties to Eric Williams.
If this leak/rumor is true, that essentially squashes all hopes and rumors that Barlog was working on a God of War sequel set in Egypt. The theory of Kratos tackling Egyptian mythology has been a rumor and a hope for years, fueled by several references to Egypt sprinkled throughout the last couple God of War titles.
While this one is only a rumor for now, it is confirmed that Sony Santa Monica is working on remaking the first three God of War titles. You know, the ones where Kratos is angry all the time and he punches Zeus a lot? Yeah, those games. They won't be out for a very long time though.
