  • Eidos-Montreal Lays Off 124 Employees

Can this industry go one damn week without layoffs?

Eidos-Montreal is laying off 124 employees, according to a LinkedIn post made on Monday, March 30. This now marks at least the third round of layoffs at Eidos-Montreal since January 2024. It was in January 2024 that 97 people were laid off by parent company Embracer Group. In March 2025 there were 75 people laid off.

The development studio announced that they are undergoing a "reduction in workforce" that impacts 124 people. These layoffs impact divisions such as production and support and are the "result of changing project needs." Eidos-Montreal also notes that the Head of Studio, David Anfossi, is also parting ways from the company today.

We are deeply grateful to the team members impacted; this decision is not a reflection of their talent, dedication, or performance. Supporting those impacted with care and respect remains our priority, while ensuring continuity for the teams moving forward.

Also, after many years as Head of Studio, David Anfossi and Eidos-Montréal are also parting ways. We thank David for his contributions and wish him the best in his future endeavors. A transition plan is underway, and further updates will be shared as new leadership is finalized.
Eidos-Montreal has not released a game on their own since 2021's Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (great game btw, you should play it). Recently, Eidos-Montreal served only as a support studio for games such as Fable from Playground Games and Grounded 2 from Obsidian Entertainment. Eidos-Montreal's major IP, Deus Ex, has not had a new release since 2016's Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

A new Deus Ex game was reportedly in the works as of late 2022. In January 2024, Embracer Group cancelled the new Deus Ex game while also laying off those nearly 100 employees from the development studio.

Eidos-Montreal has apparently been working on a few different projects, including a new Alien game. The current status of any of those projects remains unknown.

I wonder if David will form a new studio and hire a small fraction of those laid off to make spiritual successor games funded by Kickstarter?
