  • New Ark Expansion Revealed with Horrifically Shitty AI Trailer

AI slop from top to bottom.

Snail Games USA shared a new trailer for ARK: Aquatica, a new expansion coming to ARK: Survival Ascended. The new trailer is so bad that the main developer on the ARK franchise, Studio Wildcard, pre-emptively distanced itself from the project by informing fans on social media that this expansion is being made only by Snail Games.

ARK: Survival Ascended @survivetheark. ARK: Aquatica is being developed by @SnailGamesUSA Colorado, please follow them for more updates. Studio Wildcard remains entirely dedicated to the production of ARK: Survival Ascended & ARK 2, and we're excited to bring ARK: Lost Colony to you later this year!

The trailer released yesterday by Snail Games utilizes generative AI (gen-AI) for basically the entire duration. Outside of the logos and possibly a few seconds near the start of the trailer, everything was made with gen-AI. Everything from the short snippets of footage to the narrator were done using AI.

The use of generative AI is extremely obvious. The reception to the trailer was so negative that Snail Games briefly delisted the trailer from public view. Not only is it a terrible showcase of terrible gen-AI, but it tells the viewer nothing about the expansion itself. This entire trailer is garbage and the fact that it was not only greenlit but was approved for public viewing is absolutely baffling.

As for Studio Wildcard, they are working on several ARK-related projects themselves. First up is ARK: Survival Ascended, the Unreal Engine 5 remake of ARK: Survival Evolved. Survival Ascended has been categorized as "Early Access" since October 2023. Studio Wildcard is also working on ARK: Lost Colony, a major story expansion for ARK: Survival Ascended that will bridge the gap between ARK and ARK 2.

Of course, ARK 2 is also apparently still in development. ARK 2 was revealed at the 2020 Video Game Awards and shown to star Vin Diesel. ARK 2 was apparently set to be released at some point in 2023 but was delayed into 2024. As it stands here in 2025, ARK 2 has no release date yet.

I love the realistic octopus popping up out of the shallows, followed by the most mutated feet ever in the next scene.

The three-handed harpoon gun and armpit bubbles were a nice touch too.

Crimson Desert Uses GenAI Slop Art Assets Without Any Steam Disclosure
    by Shawn Zipay
And Valve is caught not enforcing their own policies.

Crimson Desert features generative AI (genAI) art assets in the final build of the game that released to everyone just yesterday. While I have yet to see the obvious genAI art assets myself, several examples have already been posted to social media and Reddit across a number of discussion threads.

According to some media outlets, there is "debate" about if the assets were made with generative AI or not....

Ark 2 Delayed, Ark 1 is Being Taken Offline But You Can Pay for a Remaster Instead
    by Shawn Zipay
The move to Unreal Engine 5 was originally said to be a "completely free upgrade." Uh, whoops?
Late in the day on Friday of last week, Studio Wildcard announced some unfortunate news bundled with some even worse news. The development studio put out a blog update that says Ark 2 is now being pushed to a 2024 release instead of its originally planned 2023 release.

If that wasn't already bad enough, the studio says that they are taking the official Ark: Survival Evol...

Pearl Abyss Admits to Using AI Created 'Placeholder' Art in Crimson Desert
    by Shawn Zipay
A "comprehensive audit" of assets is also underway.

Fans caught Pearl Abyss using generative AI (genAI) art assets in their newly released game, Crimson Desert. Not only were there obvious genAI created assets present in the game, but Pearl Abyss made no disclosure of using AI through the Crimson Desert Steam page. This is something that Valve allegedly requires, but are quite lax in actually enforcing. It took a bit after initial reporting was made, but Pearl Abyss did make a ...

Ark Upgrade No Longer Bundled with Ark 2, Instead Coming as Separate, More Expensive Bundle
    by Shawn Zipay
The studio also briefly explains why the free upgrade is no longer free.

Just last week, Studio Wildcard announced that not only was Ark 2 delayed but that fans would now have to pay for an upgraded version of the first game that was originally said to be free.

In the original announcement, Studio Wildcard said that even though you already own the original Ark: Survival Evolved, you would have to pay another $49.99 to get the Ark Respawned Bundle, which was to include...
