Ubisoft just shut down its studio in Leamington, UK and laid off several additional employees across three other studios. In a statement issued to Eurogamer, Ubisoft says that all of Leamington's 50-person team has been let go. In addition to the closure of that studio, Ubisoft is laying off employees across their Dusseldorf, Stockholm, and Newcastle studios.
In total, about 185 employees are being laid off. A "small number" of those from the Leamington location will be kept around under remote contracts.
Ubisoft Leamington was acquired from Activision Blizzard in 2017. The studio helped develop titles such as Tom Clancy's The Division, Star Wars Outlaws, and Far Cry 5. The Dusseldorf, Stockholm, and Newcastle locations helped Ubisoft develop games such as Grow Home, Anno, and The Crew.
As part of our ongoing efforts to prioritise projects and reduce costs that ensure long-term stability at Ubisoft, we have announced targeted restructurings at Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Stockholm and Ubisoft Reflections and the permanent closure of Ubisoft Leamington site.
Unfortunately, this should impact 185 employees overall. We are deeply grateful for their contributions and are committed to supporting them through this transition.
