  • PlayStation Cancels Two Live Services Games, Including a God of War Game from Bluepoint

Maybe making everything live service isn't actually the play after all.

A new report from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier says that PlayStation has canceled two unannounced live service titles on Thursday. These were unannounced titles that were being developed at two PlayStation subsidiaries: Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games.

Both of these titles were live service projects that would be regularly updated with new content and contain several ways of pulling in recurring revenue from players. These titles began after PlayStation attempted to pivot to creating several new live service titles across its many development studios.

Several years ago, PlayStation started a hard push for their studios to develop live service titles. Since then, many of the known titles have been outright canceled. These canceled titles include The Last of Us multiplayer title, a Twisted Metal game, and more. Then of course there was Concord, which was actually out for less than two weeks before being pulled. Concord's developer, Firewalk Studios, was permanently shut down shortly after the game was shuttered. Even Destiny 2, one of the earlier shining beacons of light in the live service space, has been struggling to retain players as of late.

According to a Bluesky post from Schreier, Bluepoint was working on a live service God of War game. It's not made clear how a franchise known for its story-focused single player experiences would have translated to a live service title. I can only assume cat girl outfits for Kratos, sold for 1,500 THORBUX, would have been involved.

There is no word on what Bend was working on.

With these two projects being canceled, it's unclear if there will be any studio closures or layoffs involved. Sony says that they are "working closely with Bend and Bluepoint to determine what are the next projects and plan to do everything we can to ensure there is minimal business impact."
