At this weekend's latest CitizenCon event, dubbed CitizenCon 2954, Cloud Imperium Games showed off a live playthrough of Squadron 42. Squadron 42 being the single-player narrative adventure component for the multiplayer focused Star Citizen. This showcase gave those watching in person and at home the longest look yet at the story and gameplay for Squadron 42, including a look at space combat, story cinematics, and even a client crash to get viewers fully immersed in the Star Citizen experience.
Perhaps the biggest surprise to attendees is the fact that Cloud Imperium Games announced a 2026 launch window for Squadron 42.
If you're looking at that 2026 launch window and are shocked, there's probably a pretty good reason for you to feel that way. Squadron 42 was originally announced to be released in 2014 when Star Citizen still had a Kickstarter campaign running. At some point in 2019, Cloud Imperium Games said that a beta for Squadron 42 would be released in Q3 2020. Come December 2020, Cloud Imperium's founder Chris Roberts stated that there would be no official release date nor any gameplay footage shown off for the foreseeable future. This 2026 release window is just the latest in a long line of Squadron 42 release windows.
You could think of this announcement as a concept of a release date. Given the track record for literally everything involving Star Citizen and Squadron 42, it would not be unreasonable to see yet another delay push Squadron 42 out of 2026 and further into the future.
Cloud Imperium Games states that Squadron 42 is "in the polish phase of production." This would indicate that the single player experience is technically playable from start to finish without any major hurdles. Two years is a lot of time just for polish, but when the project has already been in development for over a decade, it's but a mere drop in the bucket.
