  • Assassin's Creed Shadows Reveals Dual Protagonists, Including Japan's First Black Samurai

    Ghost of the Creed.
Outlines of Naoe and Yasuke around the title of Assassin's Creed Shadows, all set against a red background.

The Assassin's Creed franchise is finally headed to Feudal Japan, an era and locale that Creed fans have been craving for years. Assassin's Creed Shadows, the game formerly known as Codename Red, will bring fulfil that desire when it releases on November 15, 2024.

As you may already guess, Assassin's Creed Shadows will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Amazon Luna, Macs with Apple Silicon, Ubisoft+, and PC. That PC release is only going to be through the Ubisoft Store and the Epic Games Store. A Steam release in the far future is anybody's guess.

Shadows places you in 1579 Japan alongside of matter of foreign merchants, political uproar, samurai, and shinobi. Players will make their way through "the intertwined stories of Naoe, an adept shinobi Assassin from Iga Province, and Yasuke, the powerful African samurai of historical legend."

Naturally, a bunch of openly racist losers are already crying about how Shadows is "woke," influenced by "DEI," or even that the game is "not historically accurate." First of all, for the "not historically accurate" people, you have a problem with a Black samurai but are totally fine with an assassin having a supernatural fight against the Pope? You don't care about historical accuracy, you're just racist. Secondly, Yasuke was a real person and was Japan's first (first documented, at least) Black samurai.

The shinobi Naoe from Assassin's Creed Shadows.

Naoe, a shinobi, looks to be a bit more stealth oriented than Yasuke. As Naoe you will use the elements of noise, light, and shadows to avoid detection. You can "distract guards using kunai, shuriken, and smoke bombs." Naoe will also have access to a grappling hook, various parkour skills, and the hidden blade.

On the flip side is the samurai Yasuke. Yasuke is all about "brutal precision and power." He is very combat oriented and uses weapons like katana, kanabo (metal clubs), bows, naginata (polearms), and more to attack, block, and parry in encounters.

The samurai Yasuke, as depicted in Assassin's Creed Shadows.

Ubisoft looks like they're leaving the choice up to the player on who they want to play as and when they play as them. You will be able to tackle most missions as either character, with each of them having their own progression, stats, unlockable skills, and gear.

In Assassin's Creed Shadows, you will get to explore the diverse environments of Feudal Japan. Ubisoft says you will get to explore everything from "spectacular castle towns and bustling ports to peaceful shrines and pastoral landscapes." There will also be "unpredictable weather, changing seasons, and reactive environments."

As you travel throughout Japan, you will gather intel and build up a network of spies that will help you to "unveil new areas and hunt down your next target." You will also be able to "recruit several allies with highly specialized skills and abilities to help accomplish your missions."

This wouldn't be a new Ubisoft release if there weren't a few different editions to choose from. All pre-orders will get a bonus quest, Thrown to the Dogs. From there, you have to choose from the Standard Edition ($69.99), Gold Edition ($109.99), or Ultimate Edition ($129.99) of the game. Gold and Ultimate include three days of early access and Season Pass, while the Ultimate Edition also includes the "Ultimate Pack" that includes a bunch of additional cosmetics, 5 skill points, and a Red Dragon photo filter. A physical Collector's Edition is also available.
