Every role just seems so miscast.
Cate Blanchett as Lillith in the Borderlands movie.

Casting announcements for the Borderlands movie trickled out throughout early to mid-2021. Outside of a few silhouettes, we really didn't get a good look at what the cast actually looked like in character. That was true, at least until today.

The media blitz for the Borderlands film looks like it's about to kick off. A few still images from the film came out today along with a movie poster and brief teaser trailer. A full trailer is allegedly slated to arrive on Wednesday, February 21.

We see Cate Blanchett as Lillith, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jack Black as Claptrap (voice only), Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, and Florian Munteanu as Krieg. Look, I'm not going to sugarcoat this here: A lot of this cast is way older than the characters they're supposed to be portraying. Then there's Kevin Hart portraying a character that is almost always portrayed as stoic, serious, and well, fairly tall.

Who knows, maybe this movie will somehow end up being good. It's tough to imagine it will be though. The movie has been in some form of production since 2015. It wasn't until 2020 when a director, Eli Roth, was finally brought on board to direct the film based (allegedly) on a screenplay written by Craig Mazin (The Last of Us, Chernobyl). Filming took place in 2021 but then several reshoots had to happen in January 2023. Due to other commitments, these reshoots weren't directed by Eli Roth but rather Tim Miller. In June 2023, Craig Mazin removed his name from the film and said, "I cannot claim any kind of authorship of 'Borderlands', much less 'co-writing.'"

We'll be back tomorrow to post the full trailer after it goes live. Until then, feast your eyes on these teasers courtesy of People and IGN. Borderlands will be released to theaters on August 9, 2024.
