Carrey will once again portray Dr. Robotnik.
Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik

Jim Carrey is officially onboard for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film. The actor will once again star as Dr. Robotnik. This announcement comes after Carrey considered retiring from acting after Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Variety was the first to report this news, with the announcement coming very shortly after the logo for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was revealed. The logo bears a striking resemblance to Sonic Adventure 2, a video game that made its debut back in 2001 for the Sega Dreamcast. This seems to coincide nicely with a post-credits scene in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that teased Shadow the Hedgehog.

In April 2022, Carrey seemed to be keen on retiring. He flatly stated, "well, I'm retiring". Carrey continued on to say, "Yeah, probably. I'm being fairly serious. It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink that says to me that it's going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I'm taking a break". Even before this talk of retirement, Carrey has historically been very much against working on sequels to films. I believe that this is a sign that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is going to be a can't miss blockbuster.

The post-credits scene in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 did give Carrey an out if he did decide to follow through on his retirement plans. Producers on the Sonic films, Neal Moritz and Toby Ascher, said that if Carrey did retire they "wouldn't even try" to replace him with another actor to play the role of Dr. Robotnik.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is expected to be in theaters on December 20, 2024.
