A new and slimmer PlayStation 5 design is coming just in time for the holiday season. Today, Sony revealed slimmer designs for both the "regular" PlayStation 5 and the Digital Edition PlayStation 5. It's important to note that this redesign is largely just aesthetic. Sony didn't swap out the internals with more powerful upgrades or anything. The one exception to this is the internal SSD, which goes from 825GB (before OS install) to 1TB (before OS install).
The slimmer models are reduced in volume by 30% and by weight by up to 24% when compared to the previous models. There are now four separate cover panels on this new model, with the "top" portion now having a glossy look while the bottom remains in the matte white.
The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition has gone up in price with this redesign. The Digital Edition used to be $399.99 (USD), but will now retail for $449.99. The PlayStation 5 that has the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive included will remain at $499.99.
Those that do choose to purchase the Digital Edition will be able to pick up an external Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 at a later date. This external drive will be sold separately for $79.99. If you're doing the math on this one, you'll realize that buying the Digital Edition and external Blu-ray drive separately will cost you about $30 more than if you just bought the regular PS5 in the first place.
Both models will include a horizontal stand in the box. Yes, a horizontal stand is still a thing even with this redesign. Those that want the new Vertical Stand, which will be compatible with all PS5 models, will be able to pick one up for $29.99.
Sony also announced there will be new Console Cover colors for the PS5. These will arrive in early 2024 and will launch with colors such as matte Black, Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver. These covers will start at $54.99. More colors will be coming in the future.
According to Sony, these slimmer PlayStation 5 models will begin to be available this November in the United States "at select retailers" and through direct.playstation.com.
