Rockstar abandons plans for major content releases for Red Dead Online.
Red Dead Online is dead

Rockstar Games confirmed that they will not be working on or releasing any major content updates for Red Dead Online. The company will instead be shifting their focus and resources into the development of Grand Theft Auto 6. GTA Online, on the other hand, will continue to get more updates and other quality of life improvements.

Rockstar made this disappointing announcement by way of a new blog post on their official website. The blog talks about their future plans for both GTA Online and Red Dead Online. Naturally, they had a lot to say about their cash cow, GTA Online. The only thing really said about Red Dead Online is that, well, it's dead.

Over the past few years, we have been steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series — understanding more than ever the need to exceed players’ expectations and for this next entry to be the best it can possibly be — and as a result, we are in the process of making some changes to how we support Red Dead Online.

Firstly, with both new and experienced players engaging in the wealth of activities already added to this massively rich world including Specialist Roles, story-based cooperative missions, competitive Showdown Modes, and much more, we will continue to showcase these unique additions through Red Dead Online’s monthly events as we move forward, so players of all levels can enjoy everything the vast frontier has to offer.

Alongside seasonal special events and experience improvements — plus other changes to enhance and maintain a healthy Red Dead Online environment — we plan to build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions this year, rather than delivering major themed content updates like in previous years, and we will continue to highlight and share the creative efforts of our Red Dead community at every opportunity via the Newswire and beyond.
This really should not come as a surprise to any fans playing Red Dead Online. It has been made clear for years now that most of Rockstar's focus was on the continued development of GTA Online content. In comparison, Red Dead Online received only a fraction of the updates, support, and content that GTA Online would receive. It makes sense though when you figure that most of the money pouring into Rockstar is from GTA Online.

In comparison, GTA Online will be updated quite a bit in the near future. Rockstar says that in just a few weeks, there will be more to do in the Criminal Careers for Executive, Biker, Gunrunner, and Nightclub Owner jobs. There will be new Contact Mission where you can become a special field operative. Balance to several weapons and abilities will also be included. Quality of life improvements are also included as part of that update. Seasonal events, bonuses, gifts, challenges, and "other surprises" are also in the release pipeline.

This was just the latest blow to fans of several Rockstar created titles in the past several days. First, we learned that Rockstar put planned remasters on hold for Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto 4 after the severely disappointing performance of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition. Then came word yesterday that Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, issued takedown notices to the mod maker who created VR mods for Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.
