After eight years of development, the fan-created Resident Evil 4 HD Project finally has a release date. On February 2, 2022, the 1.0 release of this massive undertaking will be released to the public. The mod, developed by just two people, is based off of the 2014 "Ultimate HD" release of Resident Evil 4.

This totally free mod replaces every single texture in the game with versions that are much higher in resolution. They even made all of the UI in high definition. It also offers improved lighting effects and includes thousands of revisions to 3D models. For some of the textures, the team actually found the real-world locations where Capcom first sourced the textures from and were able to create HD textures for this project as a result. The team even upscaled the pre-rendered videos and integrated them seamlessly into this project.

The project isn't just limited to the core game either. The team went the extra mile and made improvements for the Mercenaries mode, Assignment Ada, and the Separate Ways modes. The HD Project mod is compatible with the Steam release of Resident Evil 4 including versions 1.0.6 and 1.1.0.

To make sure you're aware of the mod's 1.0 release, the team put together a release trailer for it.

Capcom is rumored to be working on a remake for Resident Evil 4 but have not announced anything yet.

If you want some idea of the sort of visual upgrade you can expect with this mod, this third-party comparison video does a great job at showing just some of the differences.
