Rust developer Facepunch Studios confirmed today that a large chunk of players in the EU have lost their save data after a fire broke out through the OVH data center in Strasbourg, France.

This fire reportedly destroyed one building and spread to the data center next door. Nobody was critically injured during this blaze, but the data stored on those servers is toast.

Facepunch has "confirmed a total loss of the affected EU servers." They continue on to say that they are "exploring replacing the affected servers." However, "data will be unable to be restored." Facepunch says that 25 of their EU servers were lost to this fire. Though Facepunch wipes progress every month, it was not clear how many of these servers were community-run servers with their own rules.

Rust has been growing in popularity, especially as of late. A number of big streamers have been helping to boost sales of the game, even creating their own servers to help the population grow.

A console release of the large-scale multiplayer survival game was just announced for a Spring release for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Microsoft cybersecurity analyst Kevin Beaumont shared some footage of the building following the fire.
