  • TwitchCon Amsterdam Canceled Due to Coronavirus Fears

Another large group event has been cancelled.
    TwitchCon Amsterdam

Those who were planning on going to Amsterdam this May for TwitchCon Amsterdam, should instead be looking to see if they can get refunds on their travel and lodging. The official TwitchCon Twitter account announced today that due to growing concerns over the coronavirus (COVID-19), they have decided to cancel TwitchCon Amsterdam.

The organizers say that the decision was a difficult one for them to make. However, they say that the "health and safety" of the community and their own employees is a "top priority."

Those who have already tried to cancel their travel and accommodation plans have encountered varying degrees of success. A number of airlines have been making special exceptions to their refund policies due to the coronavirus. Those who have signed up to be an exhibitor at TwitchCon Amsterdam will have the option to either get a full refund or to get first dibs at exhibiting at TwitchCon San Diego 2020 or TwitchCon Europe 2021.

A longer statement about the cancellation was added to the official TwitchCon Amsterdam site. A very short FAQ is also included. You can read their statement in full at the site or it has been included below for the sake of convenience.

We have been monitoring Coronavirus concerns and having weighed the potential health risks to our community we’ve made the incredibly difficult decision to cancel TwitchCon Amsterdam.

TwitchCon is the best weekend to be a Twitch fan. To say we’re disappointed you won’t be able to enjoy the show we’ve been building for you is a massive understatement. But the health and safety of our community, employees, and everyone else who has a part in making TwitchCon happen is, as always, our top priority.

Anyone who purchased a ticket will be refunded the full amount of your TwitchCon ticket. Cancellations will be issued no later than Friday, March 20. Please allow up to an additional 20 days for the refund to be processed with your financial institution. A confirmation email of your ticket cancellation will be sent to the email address you entered when purchasing your ticket.

If you have booked through Twitch’s hotel block, cancellations can be done free of charge depending on the conditions of your booking though you will need to contact RAI Hotel Services to cancel, we cannot do so on your behalf. You can cancel online or send them an email on hotelservices@rai.nl. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee refunds for those who booked outside of Twitch’s hotel block and you will need to contact the hotel or rental directly to discuss.

We look forward to hosting TwitchCon Amsterdam in the future and will keep you updated on plans to celebrate the Twitch Community.

Our sympathies to all those affected around the world.

      by Shawn Zipay
Twitch's handling of the incident has been a complete joke.

One of Twitch's more popular streamers, Emiru, issued a public statement after she was assaulted during her TwitchCon meet-and-greet this past weekend. Emiru's statement lambasts the official Twitch response that was issued concerning the assault, with her remarks calling elements of Twitch's statement "a blatant lie." The assault was captured on video. In the clip, we see a man bypass several event barriers as he bee-lines t...

Somehow GDC itself still isn't cancelled.

Two more companies announced today that they are cancelling their GDC 2020 plans over fears of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Earlier today, Amazon announced that they would no longer be headed to the latest installment of the annual event.

Amazon said that they would host a "global online event" to share news about what they were going to show off at the conference. This is actually similar to what other companies have...

Refunds Now Allowed on PlayStation Store Pre-orders but There is a Catch
      by Shawn Zipay

For the longest time, if you wanted a refund from Sony for a purchase made through the PlayStation Store, you were either completely out of luck or were maybe given a one time exception. There were a few other times where Sony cracked open that refund door another inch, such as when games were severely broken to the point of crashing systems, but these were made once in a blue moon. Even then it wasn't a guarantee that you would be issued a refund if you requested one.
