Amazon Games announced their latest game last night: New Worlds. It is a MMO PC game that is slated to launch May 2020. The big reveal came during last night's showing of The Game Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
The game will make use of Steam for its digital platform of choice on the PC, but you can buy it directly from Amazon. There are two flavors for you to perhaps purpose. There is the $39.99 Standard Edition or the $49.99 Deluxe Edition. It does not seem as though there will be any physical version of the game released.
The game was revealed by way of a new cinematic trailer that introduces you to Aeternum, the Eternal Isle. It's a "vast and diverse land of danger and opportunity." The game is set in the 17th century "in the twilight of the Age of Exploration." Check out movies like Twilight. Players are going up against never before seen flora and fauna as a starter. However, the real challenge comes in conquering the companies of rival players in addition to "the dark soul of Aeternum itself."
To note: It will be possible to turn the character flag for PvP on or off as you wish. In some respects, that's actually kind of a bummer to hear.
This dark soul, whatever it may be, will send out undead legions after you in an effort to kick your butt off the land itself. Amazon Games goes on to say that Aeternum is "open and chaotic, but rich in opportunity for soldiers, explorers, artisans, and empire-builders." It kind of sounds to me like you'll be able to pick and choose how you want to experience the game instead of being locked to just fighting things all the time? Maybe.
The big draw of New World though will be the massive sieges that they have planned. These fortress sieges against other players and supernatural invasions will feature up to 100 players on the battlefield at once. Couple that with the "visceral and skill-based" combat, it's going to be one flashy experience with 100 players out there. You will be able to join up with other players to form Companies that operate out of fortified strongholds. You can also just play alone, which allows you to acquire your own home and customize it how you want. Home owners will still contribute to the growth of the larger community around them.
New World also promises to deliver "new-limitless play" by way of classless character progression, social systems, and "rich crafting mechanics."
Pre-orders for New World are live now. Those that pre-order the game will receive Isabella's amulet, the Fist Bump emote, a guild crese set, and the Expedition One unique title. You will also get access to the Closed Beta scheduled for April 2020.
At present, it is unknown if New World will have a monthly subscription fee. It doesn't seem like there is one, but that could change as the May 2020 release draws near. There is the cinematic trailer and two developer diaries embedded below for your viewing pleasure.
“We want our players to feel the depth—and the danger—of New World from the moment they step onto the shores of Aeternum in May 2020,†said Christoph Hartmann, vice president of Amazon Games. “Our team has been working tirelessly to create a deep, immersive world that delivers challenges and surprises at every turn, and we’re so excited to reveal a bit more of it today.â€
