Though the game has had a rough launch.
Red Dead Redemption 2

The PC release of Red Dead Redemption 2 is out today on the Rockstar Games Launcher and Epic Games Store (affiliate link). Today's release offers up the core Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay experience, for better or worse, but with the added benefit of higher resolutions and framerates compared to the console releases.

This also marks the first time that a "Red Dead Redemption" game has appeared on the platform. The first Red Dead Redemption was sadly never brought over to the PC after it was released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Today's release of Red Dead Redemption 2 has been met with a lot of performance and technical issues. Many users have reported issues with the Rockstar Launcher closing unexpectedly. There are others reporting that the game stays at a black screen or outright crashes right after the initial videos play. One possible workaround is to disable your anti-virus or at least put in an exception for the Rockstar Games Launcher and Red Dead Redemption 2.

On the performance side, it's looking even more grim. The Vulkan renderer reportedly suffers from random pauses that can last upwards of a full second. DirectX 12 seems to fair a bit better in comparison. Users have noticed that the game is also not fully utilizing the GPU or CPU in many cases. There is an ever growing thread of issues that can be found on Reddit.

Benchmarks, such as those from Guru3D, show that even the mighty GeForce RTX 20180 Ti suffer from performance issues, even at 1080p resolutions.

RDR2-1080p

You can see how that performance drops when you jump to 1440p and then 4K on settings that are "custom balanced" between performance and quality and all with ultra quality texture settings.

If you can overcome the issues with simply starting the game, you may find that you will have to set the game to use setting far below what you anticipated. With even a 2080 Ti encountering issues, it seems as though the game may just need a substantial performance patch across the board. I would also be very interested to wonder what hardware Rockstar was using to render out those 4K/60fps pre-launch trailers for this PC release.
