A verified insider revealed some rather unsettling news today concerning the rumored "PS4K" that has been floating around these past couple of weeks. The PS4K has been a rumored hardware upgrade for the PlayStation 4 that includes a more powerful GPU and other improvements for 4K experiences.

It was largely a rumor but it's one that has been mentioned by numerous sources around the web and it seems to have a significant weight behind it. Today, an insider on NeoGAF revealed what he knows about the PS4K, including the power bump of the GPU and near exclusive PS4K games.

According to the user, OsirisBlack, the idea is to price the PS4K at $399.99 (USD). There were apparently plans to bump up the CPU in the device but that will bump the price up to $499.99. There is nothing being ruled out and it sounds as though Sony may still implement the better CPU. Whatever happens, it was said that the price will be no higher than $499.99.

Given that pricing information, it is noted that Sony has no plans for any type of trade-in program.

The device will play 4K Blu-ray movies and will upscale games that are not natively 4K in resolution. Speaking of media, the media player application will allegedly include a VR lounge along with a general update for the app.

Now, here's the kicker: There are already developers that are directly targeting the PS4K. It was said that while these games will also work on the PlayStation 4, they will include "considerable sacrifices made to performance." Existing games would not get any performance upgrades if played on the PS4K. The only way performance gains would be made is if the game is patched by the developer. Apparently a "handful" of games may get an update from their respective developers in the future to take advantage of the increased power.

A list of games that are targeting PS4K that will include "significant" differences to their PlayStation 4 counterparts include both PlayStation VR games and PS4K targeted titles.

PSVR games that will feature these "significant" bumps in performance and visuals include: Eve Valkyrie, Robinson, and GT Sport. The games that are being targeted for PS4K include Deep Down and "GOW4" which many believe to be God of War 4. Other games were supposedly listed but this was all that was shared.

Of course, this is all merely a rumor right now. Granted, it's a rumor that has been reported on from multiple outlets from multiple sources, but a rumor none the less. Keep in mind that the PlayStation 4 launched in North America on November 15, 2013. The console has been out now for just over two years. To put it bluntly, if this is true, Sony will undoubtedly piss off an absolute shitload of consumers.
