    5TH Cell will not be shutting down, despite earlier reports that the Scribblenauts developer was closing up shop. Sadly, it is still true that employees were laid off but an official statement made by the company tonight says that the company itself will not be shutting down.
    Unfortunately, due to a project cancellation, we have had to let go of 45 of our very talented staff members today.

    Layoffs aren't something we take lightly and we'd like to thank all our employees for all the hard work and dedication over the years.

    5TH Cell as a company is not closing down, but our focus right now is 100% on helping our staff make the transition to other external opportunities. If we haven't already reached out, any interested employer can reach us at jobs@5thcell.com.

    Our condolences to those 45 employees that were laid off today. It is estimated that 5TH Cell employed anywhere between 51 to 200 employees prior to these layoffs.

        We are still at the point with games industry layoffs where we have multiple different announcements coming in the same day. Today, we have learned that Sega made layoffs at Sega Europe, Creative Assembly, and Hardlight. All told, there were approximately 240 employees laid off from these three studios, with only a "small number" of layoffs hitting Hardlight.

        Update as of July 8, 2026: According to updated reporting, the number of employees laid off from id Software has now hit at least 136.

        A WARN Notice filed in Texas confirms that 158 people were laid off from ZeniMax just within the state of Texas. The notice was sent to Gamedeveloper.com after a request was made by the Texas Workforce Commission.

        The Destiny developer joins the ever growing list of studios impacted by layoffs this year.

        Bungie, the studio known for creating the Halo franchise and Destiny, has just been impacted by layoffs. Bungie is the latest studio to undergo downsizing or "restructuring" in 2023, joining dozens of other game studios that have done the same.
