• Steam Hits Record 12.3 Million Peak Users

Today, Steam hit 12.3 million concurrent users. This is an increase of roughly 1.2 million users from late October 2015 and an all-time high for the digital distribution platform.

The top games on Steam for the day include Dota 2 (940K+ peak), Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (653K), Fallout 4 (117K), Football Manager 2016 (81K), and Grand Theft Auto V (92.5K).

Just three years ago around this time, Steam was around 5 million peak users. In 2013, Steam was around 7.7 million peak users. In January 2015, Steam hit 8.5 million peak users. Yes, in just one year, Steam picked up almost 4 million more peak users.

But remember: PC gaming is dead.

PC gaming isn't dead :P, it was almost dead, then Valve made it relevant again.

Valve Announces New Steam Controller for 2026
by Shawn Zipay
Should be familiar to many people.

As the case was with the old Steam Machines, Valve once offered a controller that was aptly named Steam Controller. It featured two circular touchpads, a single thumbstick, and the common ABXY-button scheme.

It released in late 2015 alongside the original Steam Machine. While it was made for use with those Steam Machines, you could use it on PC or a Steam Link without any issue. It wasn't a terrible device, once you got over the awkward...

Valve Announces a New Steam Machine
by Shawn Zipay
They live!

Valve once had an idea for a small form factor gaming PC that would run SteamOS and offer PC gamers a console-like experience. The studio partnered with several vendors, each coming out with their own versions of the Steam Machine. They often featured different hardware configurations but so long as they included Valve's small list of requirements, they were given the Steam Machine branding.

The first batch of Steam Machines came out in late 2015 and cost anywhere...

Valve Shares What It Takes for Games to be Steam Machine and Steam Frame Verified
by Shawn Zipay
It doesn't take much to be Steam Machine verified.

As part of a presentation at GDC (PDF link) this week, Valve clarified what it takes for games to be given the "verified" status across their current and upcoming hardware lineup.

When it comes to their upcoming Steam Machine, Valve says that if a game is already verified for the Steam Deck, it is then verified for the Steam Machine. In other words, if a game can run at 1080p at 30 FPS it's technically Steam...
