  • Dirt Rally Surprise Released on Steam Today

Codemasters surprised Dirt fans today with a stealth release of Dirt Rally on Steam Early Access. This game literally came out of nowhere but currently features 17 cars and 36 stages spread across three different environments. Over the course of development, the team plans to add more vehicles, locations, and game modes.

Globally renowned for delivering realistic, yet fun, driving games, Codemasters is once more bringing its talent and experience to the world of rallying. With DiRT Rally, the team wanted to take off-road racing to a new level of realism, so it tore up its previous pace notes and completely rebuilt the physical simulation and driving models to truly capture the feeling of each individual car as it hurtles along a variety of surfaces in different conditions.(...)

From the outset, players purchasing DiRT Rally on Steam Early Access will get access to the following:

    • 17 CARS OVER 6 NEW AND CLASSIC CLASSES - Including BMW M3 Evo; Audi Quattro S1; Lancia Delta HF Integrale and Subaru Impreza
    • DIVERSE LOCALES - 36 challenging stages set across Hafren, Wales; Monte Carlo, Monaco and Argolis, Greece
    • TEAM MANAGEMENT – Hire up to four engineering staff to work on your car between stages
    • RALLY ASYNC – Daily, weekly and month-long challenges against fellow players from around the world without the need to be online at the same time
    • RALLY SEASONS – Compete in a succession of events with the aim of gaining promotion to the next rung on the driving ladder
    • CUSTOM RALLY EVENTS – Take any car on any track and configure and compete in single or multi-stage events against the AI’s times
    • UPGRADES – Unlock the full potential of your car with meaningful improvements to its handling and performance
    • TUNING – Tweak your car set-up based on car, track and weather conditions to best suit your racing style
    • PHYSICS-BASED ASSISTS – DiRT Rally allows players to experience cars in their purest form. It also offers a selection of real world assists similar to those seen in race and road vehicles as traction control and ABS
    • DAMAGE & REPAIRS – Wear and tear is faithfully recreated with a comprehensive and realistic damage model. Damage can be repaired by hiring Engineers to work in the team’s Service Area between stages but with a finite amount of time available

You can pick up the game from Steam Early Access right now for $31.49 (USD) during its release week. After May 4, the price goes to the normal $34.99 offering.

I will be following this games development as a long time Dirt and Codemasters racing fan, i'm hoping for echos of the original Dirt, less American music festival and more country lanes.

Oh good, nobody caught that I called it "Dirty Rally" by mistake yesterday.

Hahah, I'm just not a very big fan of car games and I don't pay too much attention to it. Nonetheless there seems to be plenty of new car games coming out recently?

Yeah, what cikame said. I just assumed it was a pun when I read the typo.

Anyways, as for the game I'm hoping for some rallycross events and a bit of touge racing (not FOCUSED on touge racing, but maybe a stage or two of it).

I'm also hoping their tuning options are as good as it sounds. I WILL NEVER ACKNOWLEDGE SWAPPING PARTS AS TUNING! Oooh, upgrade package A from HKS boosts my stats by 25%... Totally tuning... Eugh... Even Need For Speed Underground 2 had better tuning options than so many racers and that was a totally fake arcade style!

Let me play with the ECU and suspension settings damn it! Choosing tires isn't enough for me!

Actually I wouldn't mind playing as the pit crew or co-driver. For me, I'm more interested in trying out as the air traffic controller instead of being a pilot in a flight simulator game (and watch planes explode), so if there were options to be part of a live multiplayer pit crew (and watch tires fall off), or a co-driver (and write the worst pace notes while scouting), that would be kind of cool. I doubt that's a thing though.
