  • Japanese Mobile Gaming Market Hits $5.1 Billion in 2013, Surpassing Console Market

Console gaming is next to dead in Japan as most of the gaming population there have moved on to mobile games. Japan's Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) revealed that in 2013, the market for smartphone games hit $3.5 billion (USD) in Japan alone.

The total market for mobile gaming, including smartphone games, hit $5.1 billion (USD) in 2013. CESA notes that this figure is larger than the one for consoles (combining hardware and software) at just $4 billion (USD) for the same span of time.

Japanese gamers not playing on smartphones are typically found with the Nintendo DS. The DS accounted for 46.7% of the market share for mobile gaming in 2013. Next was the PlayStation Vita at 11.7%. The PlayStation 3, while not a mobile platform, accounted for 21.8% of the market share. The market for console games dropped 15.7% in Japan between 2012 and 2013.

This all changed with early consoles like the PlayStation or Nintendo 64, ultimately resulting in a 21st Century gaming bonanza.

Video consoles well and truly ruled the roost during the 2000s, but with...
