
The total market for mobile gaming, including smartphone games, hit $5.1 billion (USD) in 2013. CESA notes that this figure is larger than the one for consoles (combining hardware and software) at just $4 billion (USD) for the same span of time.
Japanese gamers not playing on smartphones are typically found with the Nintendo DS. The DS accounted for 46.7% of the market share for mobile gaming in 2013. Next was the PlayStation Vita at 11.7%. The PlayStation 3, while not a mobile platform, accounted for 21.8% of the market share. The market for console games dropped 15.7% in Japan between 2012 and 2013.
