  • Mobile Racing Title Riptide GP2 Coming to Xbox One with Six Player Local Multiplayer

Dan Hsu snapped a picture of Riptide GP2 coming to the Xbox One. According to his Tweeted photo, the development team behind the game is looking to incorporate six person local multiplayer and have it run at 60 frames per second.

A six-player split screen racing game for Xbox One! Ran smoothly. Devs shooting for 60 frames per second for each.

The game began its life on mobile platforms, including iOS and Android, so it should be no surprise that this game is capable of running at that framerate with that many players on a non-mobile platform. It was recently also released on PC. Riptide GP2 is developed by Vector Unit, the studio that did the sequel to Hydro Thunder, Hydro Thunder Hurricane.

I'm still impressed they can render the same environment six times without suffering a frame rate hit. There are devs who frown upon making split-screen multiplayer or PiP effects because telling the engine to render the same world more than once means a nasty frame rate drop, unless you resort to simplified arenas.

Audio must really suck though. Hearing everyone's engines layered on top of each other does not sound pleasing.

Again, this is originally a mobile game. I have it on my S3. I'm going to take a wild guess (since the PC version is like this) that they didn't really bump up the visuals much from the mobile to what you may see on the Xbox One multiplayer modes.

It's not a bad looking game but it's nowhere near the visual powerhouse people would expect from a current-gen release. And from the look of that photo (and yes, it's a bad thing to go off an off-center photo of a game) it doesn't really look that different from the mobile version.

Actually, here is a screenshot of the game featuring four-player splitscreen from the PC release.

Again, it's not the most visually demanding title. And just for the hell of it, here are the min and recommended specs for the PC version.
      Minimum:
      OS: Windows 7
Processor: Pentium 2.4 GHz or Athlon 64 3200+ or greater
      Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: GeForce 6800 / Radeon X1800 Shader Model 3 or greater
      DirectX: Version 10
Hard Drive: 250 MB available space
Additional Notes: Shader Model 3 or greater required

      Recommended:
      OS: Windows 8
      Processor: Intel P4 3.0 GHz or Athlon X2 64 3800+ or greater
      Memory: 4 GB RAM
      Graphics: GeForce 8800 GT 512MB / Radeon HD 3870 512MB or greater
      DirectX: Version 11
Hard Drive: 250 MB available space

If the Xbox One couldn't handle this game at 60fps, there would be something super wrong there.

I was thinking rendering Hydro Thunder six times simultaneously would put a frame rate hit on the Xbox One, let alone a game using Shader Model 3 on Direct X 10 (admittedly the level geometry doesn't look too complex). Clearly I'm underestimating what current gen consoles are supposed to do. On a side note, I recently got the game from the Android Humble Bundle, but I do not know how poorly it'll run on my phone. Should be interesting when I get around to it.

Still not sure what the audio would sound like on 6 players. Especially with the engines constantly revving and layered on each other.
