You ever see a news story that just makes you scratch your head? This is one of them.

It took almost 15 years from a mod team to create and fully release Black Mesa, a Source engine remake of Valve's original Half-Life. A bit more than a simple remake, Black Mesa took a few liberties with some aspects of their creation, opting to expand the game a bit beyond what the original Half-Life included. Some levels were redesigned, and some parts were expanded upon with all-new content.

Now, a different group of modders are looking to take Black Mesa and backport it to the GoldSrc engine, which is the engine that powered the original Half-Life. The mod is being called Black Mesa Classic and for those following at home, this will be considered a demake of a remake.

Black Mesa Classic was apparently announced back in 2019. It flew under most everyone's radar until this past week. The team just released a news update that shows off one of the game's levels, We've Got Hostiles. This map was also released as a playable demo at the same time but was pulled shortly after release due to "a last minute issue." The demo will be back once that issue is fixed.

The goal behind Black Mesa Classic is two-fold:

Our main vision for this is to give a new look to the original Half-Life in the original engine, adding more realism and immersion, making Half-Life more enjoyable and giving long life to GoldSrc.

Our second vision is to make a new base for modding, giving some new dynamics and gameplay features keeping the classic feeling of GoldSrc.
The team also wants to ensure that it can be played on "any PC without (the need for) high end hardware."

This all said, the mod team says that they are looking for additional people to help round out their team. They are looking for mappers, model makers, animators, and programmers.
