Black Mesa Xen Chapter Finally (Kind of) Playable

    11 years and counting.

The Black Mesa team has finally released a playable taste of the Xen levels that they have been working on for however long now. Actually, Black Mesa has been in development since 2008 after being announced in 2005. So, depending on how you look at it, it's been in some sort of development phase for anywhere between 11 and 14 years now.

The mod version of Black Mesa did come out back in 2012. It wasn't until 2015 that an Early Access release of the game was released. It's still considered as an Early Access release because...

Black Mesa: Xen Trailer Revealed, Release Almost a Year Away

The Black Mesa team finally released a trailer for the Xen portion of their long in-development game. As you may recall, Black Mesa was "released" in a rather incomplete stage. I say "released" because even though it was added to Steam back in May 2015, it's still listed as an "Early Access" title. I also say "released" because the entire Xen portion from the original Half-Life wasn't included. But it's now 2018 and we finally have our first actual trailer for the Xen component. The good news is that the developers say Xen alone will be a roughly ...

Black Mesa Devs Delay Xen Again But at Least They Added God Rays

Oh look, Black Mesa announced another delay. This is totally shocking and unexpected. Xen is delayed (again). Oh no. Surprising. Etc.
Straight to the bad news: we are pushing back the release of Xen. We are truly sorry for getting everyone's hopes up and then delaying... again. We worked very hard to make December, but we are not yet ready. As a team, we take FULL responsibility for that. We have an internal deadline we are confident in, and we will be getting everyone more details as we get closer to that date.
The Black Mesa team at least released so...

  • Black Mesa is Now Out on Steam Early Access for $20

Black Mesa is Now Out on Steam Early Access for $20

It took them 11 years to get to this point. 11 years. Black Mesa may have already been released for free back in 2012, but it's back again. This time it's not free despite them promoting it as free while campaigning on Steam Greenlight. This time it's $20 (USD) and available only through Steam Early Access because download links to the free mod release have been removed. I hear that the download links were pulled because there might be a new release of the free mod coming soon. However, the last time we heard anything definitive on that was from 2013. ...

Black Mesa is Counting Down to ... Something

Remember Black Mesa? It was the fan made total remake of the original Half-Life on the Source Engine. It was originally announced in late 2004 and was finally released to the public in late 2012. Unfortunately, it wasn't the "complete" version of the game. It lacked all of Xen and all of the promised multiplayer for the game. It was then one of the first games approved through Steam Greenlight to be released through Steam.

Today, here in 2015, 11 years after it was first announced, the Black Mesa website has been updated with a ... a...

Black Mesa Multiplayer - New Screenshots and Information

Hey, remember Black Mesa? Remember how it was delayed for a really long time (about eight years) and then when it finally came out (in 2012) it lacked about a quarter of the single player game and didn't come with the promised multiplayer? Do you also remember how it was one of the first ten games approved on Steam Greenlight and it still isn't out yet on Steam? Yeah, good times. However, let's ignore the doom and gloom and focus on the here and now. The now being December 2014 and the big news is that the team released two screenshots for the game's multiplayer...

  • Black Mesa to be Sold as a Retail Release on Steam Possibly on Source Engine 2

Sure, you waited years for the release of the underwhelming free mod that wasn't even complete. Now, you're waiting even longer for that mod to come out on Steam after being included in the first batch of Greenlit titles on Steam.

Today, on the 15th anniversary of the original Half-Life, comes word that Black Mesa will be sold for a price on Steam. Yes, the free mod will be given a few updates and sold for a price on Steam. It still doesn't include Xen but it is on a new version of the Source Engine. Perhaps it's on Source 2?
