• Rumor: Call of Duty 2016 Set in the 'Very Far Future' with Space Battles

A new Call of Duty will once again take place in the future, only this time it will be the very far future and not just a couple of decades beyond the present. How "future" are we talking here? Like, "very far future" kind of future. The kind of future where space battles are apparently common.

Two different sources for this rumor seem to echo the same thing about the upcoming Call of Duty title from Infinity Ward.

One usually trustworthy source, shinobi602 via NeoGAF, says that the game will be "full on sci-fi." Oh joy.

Hey, remember when every game was based on World War II and everyone got really sick of WWII and demanded something new? You know what I'm sick of now? Futuristic sci-fi. You know what I miss? World War II.

Yeah, it's a shame that CoD is really messing up futuristic sci-fi because I really wanted a Battlefield 2042 or 2143, but once the masses have enough they will complain about it so much it probably wont happen.

      Of course who knows.

Well it doesn't bother me as much since Activision did trademark Space Warfare amongst other names. And the original Infinity Ward did want to do Sci-Fi with aliens (think Independence Day) instead of Modern Warfare 2, though I'm not sure how much of the original staff is even at Infinity Ward who still feel that way. And finally, Call of Duty: Ghosts from Infinity Ward did have a space scene in it where you shoot hijackers of a satellite weapon, so if space battles can occur in the present day, then perhaps futuristic warfare will make the gameplay a bit more feasible beyond floating in space and shooting a rifle.

That said, a pretty good space warfare multiplayer shooter set in the future would be Futuremark Games Studio's Shattered Horizon. They even explain how we can hear sounds in the vacuum of space, and making a gameplay mechanic out of it. So, I'd say Infinity Ward isn't the first to explore this genre, although they would be the first to produce a singleplayer campaign for it as far as I know (Shattered Horizon had DLC that added bots for offline play, but that doesn't count). I don't really know why Shattered Horizon was removed from the Steam store, since it wasn't a bad game.

So like I said, this could work. I kind of stopped looking at Call of Duty as a military arcade shooter, and look at it as the new multiplayer deathmatch shooter until the next major trend kicks in where every game is basically an improved clone of that. I just hope they didn't waste the three years of development time over something stupid. Like fish swimming away from your face, or pushing a button to pay respects, or another attempt at an alternative to zombie horde mode (did I mention I stopped looking at the franchise as a military arcade shooter? Because I stopped looking at the franchise as a military arcade shooter).

Oh and I'd better throw this in for good measure, just because it's the internet:

I have to agree with both of you. I desperately want battlefield 2143 to happen!
And I do think that they are trying to overdo the near future/drones exoskeletons fast moving genre right now. I do hope for BF2143 to have a slower pace (just like bf2142 did). But I honestly think that out of all the CODs Ive played before, the single best moments where the missions set in space. They where done so nicely, they where beautiful, the physics and props of stuff floating around where fun, it opens up many possibilities. A shooter in free floating space sounds pretty good, though honestly I dont think the COD series would be the one to fully take advantage of this. I wish I got to experience shattered horizon, but apparently the devs abandoned it in a kind of screwed up state

Agreed. I don't think the CoD series would be the one to fully take advantage of this. I do believe it can work, but like R6: Siege and its unusual cops vs. cops gameplay, the franchise wasn't really meant for that, and it certainly isn't the first thing that pops in our heads when we think of CoD.

I didn't know Futuremark Games Studio abandoned Shattered Horizon in a poor state after the DLC was released. That's a bummer. I really like their silent walking mechanic, since fighting in space is so boring when you realistically shouldn't be hearing anything, but Shattered Horizon found a way to maintain that bit of realism while keeping gameplay fun.
