Another huge Sony L.
The third mainline entry in the Horizon franchise is still years away from release. According to a new report from Bloomberg, Horizon 3's development team consists of only a "tiny team" within Guerrilla Games. For several years now, the majority of the studio has been working on the cooperative multiplayer spinoff title Horizon Hunters Gathering.
Horizon Hunters Gathering was first officially announced in February 2026. Since then, Guerrilla Games and PlayStation have hosted a closed playtest of this co-op title, which resulted in quite a bit of negative feedback from testers.
Following the negative reception to the playtest, PlayStation told Guerrilla Games to reboot Horizon Hunters Gathering. Bloomberg says that the studio has been "working to reboot the game since June." These details come from anonymous sources speaking with Bloomberg.
Those sources go on to say that the current plan for Horizon Hunters Gathering is to completely remove the live-service components and turn the game into a more traditional cooperative multiplayer title. This rebooted version of Horizon Hunters Gathering will have a more fully realized story mode "and a far smaller scope."
Bloomberg notes that the studio "will have through December to impress executives with their next milestone." Depending on how well this new milestone is received, Horizon Hunters Gathering may end up being canceled. Regardless of this title's fate, many of the developers currently working on Horizon Hunters Gathering will be moved over to a different project "that will also be evaluated at the end of the year."
The massive push by Guerrilla to reboot Horizon Hunters Gathering means that progress on the next mainline Horizon title has come to a virtual standstill. Bloomberg says that a "tiny team" within Guerrilla is currently working on the next mainline title, and that it is "years away from completion." The first game, Horizon Zero Dawn was released in 2017. The sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, was released in 2022.
Both of the mainline Horizon titles are single-player action titles. Horizon Zero Dawn ended on a story cliffhanger that fans have been waiting to see resolved for the past four years. Good thing that after Horizon Zero Dawn development wrapped, PlayStation management tasked Guerrilla Games with making a co-op multiplayer GAAS title that now has to be rebooted. That's exactly what all fans of this single-player action series have always wanted.
