• DICE Changes How You Earn Medals in Battlefield 1

Earning medals in Battlefield 1 just got a little bit more... different. Those who know what medals are or how to earn them in a Battlefield game may want to take a seat here, because DICE is changing up the tried and true formula. They say that they're giving players more freedom to choose which medals they go after, but are limiting the achievable medals to just five a week.

That sounds a little backwards, right?
Battlefield veterans will notice some changes in how the commemorations work this time around. Each Medal still has a specific unlock criteria, but in Battlefield 1 you have the freedom to choose which medals to pursue. There are always 5 Medals to choose from, and this quintet of decorations is rotated on a weekly basis.

This goes hand in hand with the philosophy of choice in Battlefield 1. To find something that caters to your play style at any given moment, you are free to choose which Medal you’re currently most interested in tracking. You can only track one Medal at the time, but if you change game mode or role you can switch focus and go for another Medal. Your progression will be kept as long as the weekly reset hasn’t happened yet.

To earn a Medal, there are three or five stages which you need to complete. Each stage will be slightly harder or more extensive than the previous one. Take for instance the Medic-themed medal “Order of Hippocrates.” Here, the stages tie into skills that make a good Medic, i.e. getting 20 kills with Medic weapons, healing teammates 100 times, and completing 20 revives. You’ll be informed by the tracker when a stage is complete.

There are also Medals where you’ll need to excel in many different fields to get your award. For example, the “Legion of Glory” Medal challenges you to play as different classes and support your squad by doing repairs, heals, and resupplies.

There are 34 Medals in total, and unlocking each one will give you an XP bonus. Each Medal can be obtained 100 times, a feat that will grant you even more experience points. To see your progression and how close you are to obtaining the current Medal, the tracker will remind you on the deploy screen and during key progression moments.

So now, instead of just playing and earning a medal through your normal play style, you may now find yourself trying to play outside your comfort zone. It almost sounds like this is a surefire way to get people and teammates playing roles they're unfamiliar with all just to earn a new medal. Now that's teamwork!

NEarly everything in the way the game works has been towards F-ing up teamwork... You can choose to fast spawn instead of waiting for a medic... being able to auto repair your own vehicles.....

Maybe. I dont know though. With this and the battle pack change it almost seems like, and yeah, this a DUHHH thing, theyre keeping you in the game by spreading these things out. Making some long term goals that used to be short term.

I dont think thats bad,per se, just different I suppose.

Nonetheless I'm feeling really excited to play the game. Still unsure about paying for it, and I still find the pacing in the videos I see to be way too fast, but I guess I will wait for the release and for the reviews to make sure that there are custom servers that can set the player count lower

Yeah, I dont know. I've decided to wait a little on the title. All the server rumors are still up in the air, anti-cheat system is questionable, DICE is making a ton of game mechanic changes based on player feedback (so that will go well because we know how uniformed the Battlefield community is on changes.), some of the early access stuff on Youtube, to me, doesn't really look fun.

Then there is the issue of what game modes are being released and how few maps there are and how long in between DLC is.

I just don't know if this game has longevity. I don't want to buy another game that is dead in 3 months. I wont mind buying it if its $15 or so bucks like Hardline was. So anyway I'm just going to stand back on this a bit.
