The multiplayer hide-and-seek phenomenon Meccha Chameleon has officially surpassed 10 million copies sold. The milestone was reached less than three weeks after the game’s June 10, 2026 launch on Steam, cementing it as the definitive viral breakout hit of the year.
Meccha Chameleon was developed in just two months from two developers. The game places a team of hunters against a team of hiding "chameleons." These chameleons start out as little, featureless, human-like characters. The hiders have a bit of time at the start of each round to find a spot in the environment to take up a position. They then utilize in-game painting tools such to paint their featureless bodies in an attempt to blend into their surroundings. There are several levels built into the game with many more user created maps already uploaded to Steam Workshop.
This game's rise to success has been swift. The game had hit 5 million copies sold in just 10 days of release. The 10 million sold milestone was hit after 16 days of its release, hitting a peak concurrent player count of over 340,000.
Meccha Chameleon exploded across TikTok and Twitch as clips of players panicking to match wall textures went viral. This game was quickly billed as "friendslop," given its low price, low barrier to entry, focus on bite-sized multiplayer experiences, and its rapid rise in popularity amongst groups of streamers. Meccha Chameleon joins other "friendslop" titles such as Peak, Among Us, Lethal Company, and Content Warning.
