The mystery of the desert statue (aka: The Hellstone) was revealed at The Game Awards this past week. That statue was a teaser for the new Divinity game from Larian Studios. You probably already recognize the Larian and Baldur's Gate 3 names by now, given that it won a crazy amount of awards including several Game of the Year nominations and wins.
Larian is returning its roots with a new Divinity title. This upcoming Divinity is not named "Divinity 3" nor is it "Divinity: Original Sin 3." It is simply "Divinity." What this means for when the story takes place in the overall Divinity saga really remains to be seen just yet. Larian does at least note that this Divinity is a "brand new game that doesn't require experience with previous Larian titles." However, "those who've played Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 will be able to enjoy greater understanding and continuity."
Outside of the brief bit revealed in the press release and the footage seen in the announcement trailer, little is known about Divinity. We do not yet know if this will be a turn-based strategy RPG like the prior Divinity: Original Sin games or if it will be a third-person ARPG like the non-Original Sin titles.
Swen Vincke, founder and game director of Larian Studios, said “Despite our long history with the series, this is our first game entitled ‘Divinity.’ We’re ready to bring everything we’ve done previously into one place. This marks the beginning of something with more breadth, depth, and intimacy than anything we’ve created before. We’ve been building toward this moment ever since we took our fate into our own hands. This is the Divinity we’ve always wanted to make and you're going to have loads of fun with it.”
There is probably a 0% chance that the embed of the Divinity announcement works below due to some adult material, so you'll probably have to go directly to YouTube to view it.
