Ubisoft has been cooking up a significant transformation for Rainbow Six Siege over the past couple of years that they are finally ready to release. In March, the studio will showcase a soft reboot of Siege, complete with a bit of a name change: Rainbow Six Siege X.
Ubisoft says that the purpose of this update will be to "reinforce Rainbow Six Siege's position at the top of tactical first-person shooters by introducing new ways to play, deepened tactical gameplay, refined game feel and major upgrades all around."
The Rainbow Six Siege team will host a special Siege X Showcase event on March 13th at 1PM ET. This livestreamed event will "unveil all the evolutions coming with Siege X" along with "many more surprises."
Specifics on what the changes in Siege X were not yet shared, that's why they're hosting a showcase, but you can pull a few clues from the teaser trailer. We can see players running across walls while rappelling. There are some additional environmental interactions as well, such as shooting a fire extinguisher to obscure vision, taking out lights, and more.
The transformation to Rainbow Six Siege X is expected to kick off in time for the game's tenth year. It's assumed that Siege transforms into Siege X in June 2025 or later. A Reddit post does seem to suggest that when the Siege X update is out it will turn Rainbow Six Siege into a "new game." You can probably view this update to Siege X to be something akin to what Valve did with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Counter-Strike 2.
Depending on your view of Counter-Strike 2, you're either very excited for Rainbow Six Siege X or very afraid for what the future holds.
