Time for another round of bad news / good news from Sony.

The classic PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 console themes for the PlayStation 5 are going away tomorrow, January 31, 2025. This is the bad news.

These classic themes were added to the PlayStation 5 in late 2024 as part of Sony's 30th anniversary celebration of the launch of the original PlayStation. These themes included unique boot sequences, along with audio and visual changes to the main PS5 dash that were based off of their previous consoles. Hearing and seeing the classic boot sequences for the original PlayStation consoles has been fantastic.

For some reason, Sony decided to make these themes stick around only for a limited time and that limited time is about to come to an end. The themes will be removed tomorrow.

The good news is that Sony says they are "doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead." What exact that means is unclear. It does seem kind of strange that Sony won't or can't let everybody keep these themes and continue to use them right now.

It also isn't clear if Sony plans to bring these specific themes back as free or paid offerings. I have to imagine people aren't going to be too happy with Sony if they offered these free themes for a couple of months, pulled them from everyone's PlayStation 5, and then brought them back as something you have to spend money to reacquire.

Some more bad news did follow after Sony says they were going to bring these specific themes back. The company says that while they are hoping to bring these themes back in the future, they have no plans to release any other new themes.

Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow.

To summarize all of this: The classic themes are going away tomorrow (this is bad). The themes will return at some point in the future (this is good). No other themes will be released (this is also bad (well, more sad really)).
