  • NetEase Lifts Marvel Rivals Bans Made Against Steam Deck, Linux, and Mac Players

Turns out that simply using a different operating system isn't actually cheating.
Various heroes and villains from Marvel are shown in the midst of a battle from a video game.

Marvel Rivals developer NetEase offers a sincere apology to those users that were recently banned from their online competitive shooter for the high crime of playing on a Steam Deck, Linux, or Mac.

Several legitimate players recently got caught up in a big ban wave because NetEase forgot to whitelist compatibility layers/software that non-Windows users need to use to play games on non-Windows systems. That is to say, the Marvel Rivals anti-cheat flagged every non-Windows operating system as a cheat. This resulted in many (supposedly) legitimate players catching bans that would prevent them from playing the game for upwards of 100 years.

NetEase has reversed those false-positive bans and has apologized to the players that got caught up simply for not using Windows to play. The following apology and statement was issued via Discord.

Recently, we've received feedback from players regarding an issue where some individuals playing in compatibility layer programs have been mistakenly flagged as cheaters, even without using any cheating software. This has resulted in bans. We sincerely apologize for this situation and want to assure you that we do not & will not ban players who are playing fairly and without cheating.

We have identified the specific reasons behind these false bans and have compiled a list of affected players. We have lifted these bans and want to express our heartfelt apologies for the inconvenience this has caused.

Our mission is to provide all players with a fair, just, and enjoyable gaming environment. Therefore, preventing and identifying cheaters is one of our top priorities. We have invested significant manpower and resources to improve the speed and accuracy of our detection systems. With any any ongoing detection system, there is always room for improvement. We appreciate your assistance in helping us tackle this challenge. If you encounter any cheating behavior, please report it immediately; our reporting system will respond promptly. If you believe you have been wrongly banned, you can appeal to our customer support team, and we will review your case and respond in a timely manner. You can reach the support team via either in-game or in Discord!

Thank you for your understanding and support!
Those users are probably quite grateful for having the ban lifted with the first major content drop on the way for Marvel Rivals. More details on that new content, which includes the Fantastic Four as playable characters and a New York map bathed in the red light of a Blood Moon, will be shared on January 6th.

Netease Kills Custom Skins in Marvel Rivals
      by Shawn Zipay
You had to know it wouldn't last.

The start of Season 1 for Marvel Rivals included at least one change that wasn't documented in any of the patch notes. Developer NetEase added in an asset hash check. If the hash value of an asset differs from what is expected, the custom asset won't be loaded and the default ones will be used.

Custom skins for Marvel Rivals started to be used shortly after the initial launch on December 6, 2024. These custom skins included things like...

NetEase Isn't Wasting Time Adding Fake Information for Marvel Rivals Dataminers to Find
      by Shawn Zipay
They would rather spend time actually developing the game.

There has apparently been some big conspiracy theory kicking around that NetEase and/or Marvel Games have intentionally be adding fake information into Marvel Rivals updates in order to trick dataminers. Whenever a new update is rolled out, dataminers dive in to see if they can surface information on upcoming roster additions that were not officially announced yet.

Often, future characters would be revealed by...
