Kadokawa also owns Spike Chunsoft and a bunch of anime.
Reports from Bloomberg and Reuters say that Sony is in talks to acquire Kadokawa Corporation, a "Japanese media powerhouse" that owns numerous subsidiaries. Among those subsidiaries owned by Kadokawa is FromSoftware, the development studio behind 2022's Game of the Year Elden Ring, potential 2024 Game of the Year Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Bloodborne, and the Dark Souls series.
The talks between Sony and Kadokawa are said to be "ongoing." Sources familiar with the talks say that if the two sides reach an agreement a deal could be signed in the coming weeks.
In addition to owning a majority of FromSoftware, Kadokawa also owns Spike Chunsoft, Acquire, Gotcha Gotcha Games, and FromNetworks. Spike Chunsoft is perhaps best known for the Danganronpa games and publisher of several titles like the recent release of Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero for Bandai Namco. Acquire started out developing the amazing Tenchu games for PlayStation and most recently made Mario & Luigi: Brothership for the Nintendo Switch.
Kadokawa is perhaps best known for owning several different publishers, film, and visual companies that deal with manga, visual novels, books, and anime. Kadokawa also owns subsidiaries that focus on real estate and advertising.
Sony already has a 2% stake in Kadokawa as well as a stake in FromSoftware directly.
If this deal does actually happen, Sony would then own FromSoftware and could potentially make future FromSoftware releases exclusive to their PlayStation consoles. Games such as Elden Ring, Dark Souls 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Armored Core 6 Fires of Rubicon have all been multiplatform releases.
