On September 12, 2024, a new PlayStation 5 firmware update was rolled out. This update added a new Welcome hub, Party Share features, and more. This update (version 24.06-10.00.00) had the unfortunate side-effect of causing some rather severe graphical issues with a number of PlayStation 5 titles.
The game with the most reported issues was Final Fantasy 16. Some issues include, but were not limited to: Large black squares over taking huge portions of the scene, blobs of color appearing throughout the environment, crashes when loading or attempting to fast travel, and more. A few of these issues can be seen in the below clip.
There were similar bugs reported in titles such as Star Wars Outlaws, No Man's Sky, Death Stranding, and others. At least with the case of Final Fantasy 16, Square Enix said earlier this week that they were working with Sony to rectify the issue.
Thankfully, Sony was somewhat quick on rolling out a fix for these issues. A new firmware update for PlayStation 5 rolled out earlier today (September 20, 2024) that should fix these graphical issues that came about after the previous update. Those of you with PlayStation 5 hardware should update to the latest firmware as soon as possible. This will bring your PlayStation 5 up to version 24.06-10.01.00.
The full patch notes for this new firmware update are short and very typical for Sony firmware updates.
