  • Budget for BioShock Movie Scaled Way Back

The Netflix film adaptation of BioShock is said to be "reconfigured" to be a "more personal" film. That is a polite way of saying that Netflix has cut the budget back significantly for BioShock.

This unfortunate news was shared via Variety and comes direct from BioShock producer Roy Lee during a San Diego Comic-Con panel. Lee has produced films such as It, The Departed, and The Ring. The BioShock movie is still set to be directed by Francis Lawrence. Lawrence has directed films such as Constantine (2005), I Am Legend, and The Hunger Games.

A film version of BioShock was announced back in February 2022. Since that time, Netflix replaced Scott Stuber with Dan Lin as the film chief at Netflix. Lin has been making budget cuts for projects in an effort to reduce excessive spending at Netflix.

"The new regime has lowered the budgets,” Lee said. “So we’re doing a much smaller version. … It’s going to be a more personal point of view, as opposed to a grander, big project." - Roy Lee
Lee also says that Netflix is changing their compensation terms. Instead of compensation being tied to "buyouts of prospective backend profits," compensation will be instead be a more traditional model tied to viewership numbers. This payment model is closer to how traditional theatrical releases handle compensation.

Details on the movie are still quite scarce, but it is assumed that the film will follow the events of the first BioShock game. The game, BioShock, was released back in 2007. The first game takes place in the underwater city of Rapture, a place built to be a utopia but ends up being everything but.

Thanks. It didn't make a big change to the paragraph but still, fixed.
