  • Bungie Apologizes for Destiny 2: The Final Shape Launch Server Issues

Server issues hindered players for nearly the entire launch day.

Bungie was rather busy yesterday trying to get their servers under control for the launch of Destiny 2: The Final Shape expansion. What should have been a highlight for players that have been with the franchise for a decade, instead ended up being a frustrating experience full of technical woes.

Bungie rolled out various server-side fixes throughout the day, though very little seemed to actually work until a rolling server restart took place late in the day. The server issues initially prevented players from logging into the game or characters. Once players were successfully able to log in, more issues prevented players from launching into any of the new story missions, watching the important story cutscenes, or receiving credit for missions.

As you can probably imagine, players weren't too thrilled about missing out on important story beats. Initial user reviews for The Final Shape currently sit at "Mixed" on Steam. This is actually a significant improvement from even just a few hours ago when reviews were sitting at a "Mostly Negative" average.

The uptick in the more positive reviews is probably due to the fact that the servers are mostly working today. There are still a few lingering issues but compared to the state of the game yesterday things are vastly improved.

Bungie's engineers have obviously been working quite a bit on the issues since they began yesterday. Their efforts have seemingly paid off as the number of reported issues have gone down significantly.

Today, Bungie issued a couple of apologies to fans due to these issues.

Hey everyone, if connection issues have blocked you from playing or enjoying The Final Shape today, we want to apologize. We’re hard at work trying to resolve each of these issues as quickly as possible, and many of the connection issues from this morning have already been fixed.

We built The Final Shape to be an exciting, cathartic, story-driven adventure for everyone to enjoy. We’re truly sorry if connection issues and instability is getting in the way of that experience, and we promise to keep working until these issues are resolved.
Bungie also shared a little behind the scenes look at what was going on. Specifically, they shared a look at a chart showing how many "Kick to Orbit" errors they saw reported in their systems. You can clearly tell right about when the rolling server restarts started to take place late last night.

As it currently stands, players should be able to play through the campaign and new content without many issues this evening.
